Operation Lulz

This is a chronicle and archive of (and reasons behind) certain events on Necrotic Obsession. These actions are/were taken in light of serious attitude problems displayed by upper management, and because it was funny. It's pretty much a litany of lies, thread lockups, post deletions and general nastiness. If you don't post there (and even if you do), this is going to seem petty and boring. To the rest of us, it's fucking hilarious.

This is not a war. We are not fighting for anything. I can't even imagine a situation that would correspond to victory conditions in this case. This is about the lulz.

The main lulz delivery system is Renfield (Daniel Dow), owner and adminstrator of the site. He owns the site and he pays for it. Known collaborators (posters who will support Renfield and agree with him regardless of his position on any issue): spydr (who supports everything Renfield says or does without question, by her own admission below); golem (who doesn't understand but has taken sides anyway); everyone else is off limits (because they don't understand and have hence kept out of it, or because they have correctly judged that the best course of action is to not care).

I get banned from NO. The stated reason is my insistence on backing up my opinion about Peak Oil. What pushed him over the edge, apparently, was a thread I started asking why experts are always wrong about everything. As you can see, this enraged him. The implications of this are slightly (but at this stage, only slightly) disturbing.

At the time of my banning, I had 7,906 posts. I joined N.O. on 10 September 2007.

The next day, DarkSecretLove started a thread asking people if they wanted me back. On this thread, Renfield claims the reason he banned me was:

I banned him because he trolled me for moths after repeated attempts on my part to get him to stop and in the end, when he finally did hit my last nerve, he finishes up by calling me a liar.

This is a lie. I had never called him a liar at that point. I called him "predictable" (as he admits himself further down the thread), which simply means that I know what he's going to do next. Ironically, by calling me a liar, he unveiled his own level of commitment to the truth. (The thread where Renfield lies about me is here, so you can make up your own minds about it.)

In this same thread, psycho (who hates me still) made the following rather elegant summary of the general mood of the thread:

Look, the point of it all is, many members who have been contributing for years to your website are very dissatisfied with your decision in this matter. These are people whom all those worthwhile know and much enjoy the presence of. It is disheartening to us that you lack concern for our opinion about this. He brought a lot of traffic and entertainment to this website. I haven't seen anyone create as much excitement over projects like the NO Awards or the interviews for, well, the six years that I've been here. That's a big deal because pretty much EVERYONE was paying attention to that. Yes, this is your site. Yes, you spend money and time on this site. I just know from PERSONAL experience that as an administrator I would suck up and deal, considering how many people enjoyed having him here.

But sucking up and dealing are two things at which Renfield does not excel. Further down the thread still, he mentions something which I found to be rather revealing:

And by the way, I never even mention it in this whole discussion, but probably one of my best online friends from here doesn't even come here anymore because of him. That has always bothered me.

Now his strange reactions are starting to make a lot more sense - if he thought I had somehow influenced a friend of his to not post on the boards, then you can understand. Who wouldn't do whatever he had to to protect his friends? Certainly you should look after your friends before some random poster on a board - but is that what really happened? More on this later.

During this time, I was sent word from DarkSecretLove that I could have my ban lifted ONLY by issuing a grovelling apology to Renfield. Not only that, but he was kind enough to word it for me. This is what he wanted me to say:

"I know you got seriously tired of me trolling your every thread in cer. hem. with the same shit over and over even though it was clear we would never agree because I just couldn't stand the fact that you just wouldn't agree to the point where I knew it annoyed you but I kept doing it anyway and actually started posting things with the intent to annoy you and it did it in some transparent passive aggressive way so that I could then try to act like it was just all you imagining it and I am truly sorry for that and will never do it again to you or anybody else here"

Well, that just doesn't sound like me at all, now, does it? Run-on sentences, terrible style and grammar. But moreover, I couldn't issue that message without lying, and that's not something I do. However, soon afterwards, I was unbanned without preconditions, due to pressure from established posters.

As soon as I was unbanned, I wanted to get to the bottom of that curious remark about his friend who never posts anymore. I guessed this this was andetwistedwhispers, and asked what he meant by the remark in this thread. Again, this apparently touched a nerve because he locked the thread and refused to answer any questions, despite me giving him plenty of options in my opening post.

This is an extract from an IM conversation with andetwistedwhispers from the 18th August 2008:

As you can see, she was clearly under the impression that he asked her to leave. Further on in the same IM conversation she says:

(4:38:58 PM) solo1: I'm not sure what exactly you expect from me on this.

Again, you'll notice that the agent is Renfield, and not me. So, if anyone is to be blamed for "driving" andetwistedwhispers off the board, it's Renfield!

There are other chats I have saved concerning Renfield and the myriad difficulties andetwistedwhispers had with his site (and with me) that would make Renfield look very foolish indeed (mainly because he agrees with my assessment of the situation, and tries to get her to understand this), but I gave my word to him that I would not show them to anyone. In tangentially related news, andetwistedwhispers had a habit of threatening to leave the boards "forever", only to return a few weeks later as though nothing had happened. This has happened at least three times that I'm aware of.

Also evident in this thread is a common Renfield technique: He says "I don't want to participate in it anymore.", but when I offer the same deal ("So, let's just ignore the whole thing and move forward.") he posts again and locks the thread, quoting possibly the least convincing evidence (because a small child could edit Administrator logs) I have ever seen. More lies. More hypocritical bullshit.

As a result of harsh words posted in We Need More Solo1, Phantasm posted a public apology, to which Renfield responded "Don't worry about it. I'm not holding any grudge.". This was obviously a lie, as demonstrated by the events of 24 February 2009 ("stick your apology up your ass").

My post gets deleted and I get banned after posting this post:

As per Lucifera's request above, the following paragraphs follow on directly from the extract posted in this post:

We may never know whether or not I would have signed that piece of paper, because within that 24-hour period I received another messenger in my tastefully decorated desert demesne. There was consternation - an uprising amongst the ordinary posters, upon which the success of NO depends. As I did not have access to NO at this time, I was unaware of how bad things were. New members joined some of the most established members in a crusade of protest. Had anyone asked me, I could have predicted this reaction to my unjustified and unnecessary ban, but clearly this was unexpected by the elite, and rattled the cages of the indolent administration. Vast swathes of regular content providers stopped providing content, and the entire forum died - except for those threads concerned with protesting my ban, of course.

My love for NO was unabated however, and I did not wish to see the forum crash and burn simply because of one bad decision - no! I sent frantic messages out to my loyal followers begging them to continue posting as normal, and not to allow my ban affect their support for NO. However, despite my efforts, the pain of my loss was simply too great to bear, and the protests continued.

Then, later that night, I received word that I had been unbanned! This was puzzling. Had not the messenger from NO explicitly stated that my ban would not be overturned without signing the piece of paper? How could this be? Was the administration admitting error? Was this a sign that they were, at least, willing to listen to the wishes of the people? I fervently hoped so. I came back with some questions on what happened, but sadly the old instincts of the administration were to raise their ugly heads again. There were deletions, locked threads, evasions, lies, and Admins posting on locked threads. It was an all-too familiar scene, and I despaired! As the enforced exile of the ban ended, so began the voluntary exile of solo1, and I sank into a depression. I cut off all means of communications, and refused to entertain either well-meaning visitors, or messengers from like-minded fellows proposing violent operations against the board, something I could never condone.

But the day is coming when the corrupt administration and their collaborators will be forced to acknowledge their actions and deal with the consequences - their usual sources of protection will be denied them. Because sooner or later, the day comes when you can no longer hide from the things you've done.

As you can see, that was the first post on the thread to link to other threads, to prove my accusations were true. As with the Peak Oil disagreements, it's not so much having a different opinion that annoys Renfield - it's being able to prove it.

After a day or two, I feel that the time is right to test the waters. I wanted to know if it was just me, or the specific content of the post that caused the problem. I ask Agent #304 (codename Lucifera) to post the above extract and almost instantly Renfield deletes the post and she receives a warning. As Lucifera is not a volunteer, her part in the merry farce is now over, and we thank her for her service.

Ideally we'd have to wait for a few days for the operation to continue. The plan was that the thread would slide down towards the bottom of the page and then get bumped. However, two problems arose. One was that no one was posting. And not just on my thread - on any thread! It was as though the forum completely died. I hadn't spent any time there, but apparently a lot of posters stopped posting or left the forum when I got banned, and it's been pretty dead ever since. The plan was making assumptions that were simply not true.

The second problem was that Renfield openly attacked Phantasm in the Chat Box. This is an unedited extract of the transcript:

We could spend a lot of time analysing that conversation and the many factual errors Renfield commits and de facto admissions - but it's enough to say that a few hours later, I had a new field operative: Agent #416 (codename Phantasm).

The cracks are showing. In the I Am Your God thread, he has taken to insulting me personally, comparing me to a leader of Scientology and associating me with hardcore homosexual pornography. Once again, there seems to be a failure of the imagination. What does it say for an Admin who personally attacks a poster who can't respond because the same Admin banned him? Also, notice from the chat of 24 February 2009, Renfield's stated reason for being so annoyed with Phantasm is that she bumped my thread. Since then, Renfield himself has bumped the thread three (!) times, mainly to insult me personally. More lies. More bullshit.

The End of the Lulz

The entire board seems to have died. The only people posting are hardcore Renfield fans or people who don't know any better. This is a shame, because it means exposing the bullshit isn't fun anymore. It's like kicking a retarded child in the teeth. For now, and indefinitely, Operation Lulz is over.

Apparently I spoke too soon. There are those who feel that kicking a retarded child in the teeth is funny. I received an email anonymously (from operationlulz@gmail.com) today. It had no text, and no explanation, but there were two image attachments, which are here and here. It took me a while to figure out what the hell was going on, but it seems, if these images are real (and not just shopped), that someone managed to hack into the Admin panel of necroticobsession.com, ban all the admins, and unban myself and some other people who were banned in the middle of the anti-solo1 maelstrom.
