Proposition 8Published in The Californian 26th October 2008 Dear Editor, I'd like to address some wrong-headed letters that have appeared in your editorial pages recently regarding gay marriage. Taking the arguments point by point: It's Destroying Marriage: No one's able to explain this to me - how on earth does it affect your marriage if millions of men suddenly decide to marry each other? How does it affect you at all? They're not going to take up arms and wage war against you: they don't care. Neither should you. If it's the children you're worried about, you'll be glad to know that every study indicates that gay parents are just as capable of being bad parents as you are. But, crucially, no more so. It's a Lifestyle They Choose: Really? I don't remember choosing to feel sexually attracted to girls. I certainly couldn't wake up tomorrow and decide that having sex with other men is now OK with me. Could you just make that choice? If it's not true for you, why should it be true for anyone else? In any case, what kind of fool would choose a life that results in much of the country hating him just for what he does when no one's watching? Maybe that's why so many of them stay in that closet they're all so fond of. It's Redefining the Traditional Meaning of the Word 'Marriage': Where are all these latter-day Noah Websters coming from? Suddenly everyone's concerned with word definitions! Well, word definitions change all the time, as anyone who uses the term 'gay marriage' will be forced to admit. There was a time when 'citizen' meant 'white landowner', but we got over that. And we'll get over this. And 'tradition' just means doing the same thing the same way because it's the way everyone else has done it for as long as anyone can remember, until we all die of stupidity. Hence, any progress in any field of human activity has been the result of someone ignoring tradition. I'm not gay, but I can spot stupidity at a thousand paces. Making a specific law to stop gays from getting married is retarded and un-American. What kind of a country will you be living in where rapists, murderers and paedophiles can all legally marry without impediment, but not gays? Grow a pair - stand up for your country, your rights and the rights of others - vote NO on Proposition 8. Yours, etc. |
